The USA seized a Russian sanction tanker: is Europe following in the Baltic Sea?

According to ТСН: After a week-long chase in the Atlantic Ocean, American forces, supported by Royal Air Force planes from the United Kingdom, seized the Russian tanker Marinera. Earlier, in December 2025, the U.S. Coast Guard attempted to detain this vessel when it, flying under the Panama flag and named Bella1, was heading from Iran to Venezuela. At that time, the crew refused to comply with orders and changed course towards the Atlantic, later changing both the flag and the name to Russian.

The tanker Bella1/Marinera has already been under U.S. sanctions since 2024 for illegally transporting Iranian oil. Before the detention, Russia dispatched a submarine and other military forces to protect the vessel, but this proved to be in vain. After the detention, the Russian Ministry of Transport stated that the U.S. military, which had a warrant for the ship's arrest, had no right to detain it, and later, the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed a demand for humane treatment of the Russians on board.

The situation with Venezuelan oil

The seizure of the Russian tanker occurred against the backdrop of an American military operation in Venezuela, which contributed to the removal of the illegitimate President Nicolas Maduro. The White House released an image of Trump with the comment:

"This is our hemisphere, and the President of the United States will not allow our security to be threatened."
According to Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, this fits into
"Trump's doctrine"
, in which the U.S. will use its armed forces to protect its interests.

Since September 2025, American forces have begun attacking vessels transporting drugs, and since then, 35 attacks have been confirmed in the Caribbean and Pacific regions. In December, Trump announced a "complete and final" blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. It is known that the new government in Caracas may provide the U.S. with between 30 to 50 million barrels of sanctioned oil. Trump noted:

"This oil will be sold at market prices. I will control the money, as President of the United States, to ensure that it benefits the people of Venezuela and the United States."

The tankers seized by the U.S. are likely intended for further sale, and the Senate claims that Venezuela no longer has tankers to transport oil due to a lack of storage space.

Reactions from the international community

The British Secretary of Defense, John Healey, characterized the detained vessel as part of a Russian-Iranian scheme supporting terrorism. White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt stated that the crew of the detained vessel may be held accountable for violating sanctions. In turn, the Chinese administration stated that the seizure is a serious violation of international law, and Russia accused the U.S. of piracy and called for action against America.

In Moscow, there has been no official reaction from Putin or other high-ranking officials yet. This raises concerns about the negative impact of the Marinera situation on future relations between Russia and the U.S. There are fears in Europe that it should follow the example of the U.S. and not be afraid to detain Russian tankers.

As is known, Russian vessels are involved in delivering "unknown" drones to European ports and have also been spotted in areas of important cable damages in the Baltic Sea. One of the latest such incidents occurred in late December 2025 when a Russian freighter linked to the "shadow fleet" was detained in Finland.

The seizure of the Russian tanker Marinera has become an important event on the international stage, highlighting the escalation of geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and Russia. The American administration hopes these actions will deter aggression from Iran and Russia in the region. At the same time, the reaction from the international community could worsen the already complex relations between the states involved in this incident.
