Starbucks to close some coffee shops in Britain: which stores will cease operations.
Closure of Starbucks stores in Great Britain
According to The Sun: Starbucks plans to close 'some' of its 520 stores in Great Britain after analyzing its café network.
On Thursday, the company confirmed that it has begun consultations regarding the possible closure of several of its stores in Great Britain, which may lead to job losses for employees.
GettyHowever, it is still unknown how many stores will close and in which locations.
Starbucks has about 520 of its own stores in Great Britain, as well as franchised cafés.
Cuts in North America
Additionally, Starbucks reported plans to reduce its network in North America by 1% this year and cut around 900 jobs at its headquarters.
By the end of June, the company had 18,734 stores in North America, and by the end of September, that number is expected to decrease to 18,300.
Starbucks plans to spend $1 billion on these cuts, which are to be completed by the end of this month.
Restructuring the business
Today's announcement marks the second instance in which Starbucks has reduced corporate jobs since 2018. At that time, about 350 employees were laid off, and earlier this year—1,100 corporate employees in February.
The company is restructuring its business to invest more in stores and improve customer service.
“As stated in the letter shared by Brian Niccol (CEO), we conducted a review of our café network in North America, and some stores were identified for closure where it was not possible to create the physical environment that customers and partners (employees) desire, as well as where there is no path to financial performance.”
“In the regions of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, we conducted a similar analysis of the store portfolio to ensure the correct placement of our stores, generate adequate levels of traffic, and operate in the right formats.”
“While business in the EMEA regions is on track to fulfill its commitment to opening 80 new stores in Great Britain and 150 in EMEA this financial year, some stores in Great Britain, Switzerland, and Austria will close as a result of this portfolio analysis.”
Starbucks was founded in 1971 and today serves more than 40,000 stores worldwide.
The background business processes occurring at Starbucks have been influenced by changing consumer needs and preferences. The company is trying to adapt to new market conditions by investing in technology and enhancing the customer experience. The situation with store closures in Great Britain is part of a global strategy to rethink the business with the aim of achieving sustainability and growth.
