Chemistry Student Dies After Chewing Gum Accident – Substance Found Four Times More Potent Than TNT.
Deadly Incident in Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: A tragic accident in 2009 claimed the life of 25-year-old chemistry student Volodymyr Lykhonos in Ukraine. The young man inadvertently dipped his chewing gum into an explosive compound, triggering a fatal detonation. Lykhonos suffered catastrophic injuries from the blast, which ultimately proved fatal.
Lykhonos, a chemistry faculty student, had a habit of dipping his gum into citric acid. However, when he placed the gum in his mouth this time, an explosion occurred. The powerful blast tore off his jaw and lower face. Despite emergency medical responders arriving quickly, they could not save him due to the severity of his wounds.
Dangerous Substances
Investigators found approximately 100 grams of a powder resembling citric acid on Lykhonos’s desk. Experts later determined the substance was hazardous to transport. Bomb disposal units were called to the scene. Police spokesperson Elvira Biganova stated that the material could be up to four times more powerful than TNT, underscoring the extreme danger involved.
The exact location of the incident remains unclear. Additionally, Iryna Lisovska noted that Volodymyr Lykhonos had not completed his studies and had been expelled a year earlier. This tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the risks posed by everyday substances when handled without proper caution.
The death of Volodymyr Lykhonos has raised serious concerns about safety in educational institutions, particularly in chemistry labs. The incident highlights the urgent need for stricter oversight of dangerous materials and enhanced safety training for students. Such cases may prompt a review of existing rules and procedures in schools to prevent future tragedies.
