Lidl recalls failed Halloween decor: what's wrong with the sign

According to The Sun: A mother was shocked to see the 'inappropriate' word on a Halloween sign sold at Lidl.

This large sign, costing £7.99, turns the innocent phrase 'trick or treat' into something much less kid-friendly.

This mother thought the sign was more suitable for a 'red light'.facebook

One shopper spotted the neon sign while shopping at Lidl in Norwich the day before Halloween.

In a video she posted on Facebook, she described how she did a double-take when she noticed the signs.

In her post, she wrote:

“Lidl’s Halloween decor this year is getting too real. When you see the neon sign ‘Trick or Treat’, but your mind instantly recalls ‘F*** or Treat’. It seems some Halloween spirits are more explicit than others! Who else sees this?”

She picked up the sign and said the more she looked at it, the more surprised she became.

She added:

“I’m just in Lidl, looking for Halloween decor, we’re going on a caravan trip and look, a sign that says... ‘f*** or treat’. And it’s neon... and it glows. Even better! I think it means ‘trick or treat’. Maybe it’s for the red light. They even have a yellow one!”

Her post received numerous emojis, likes, and comments from followers.

One person wrote:

“Buy it now, lol.”

‘I did a double take’

In another post on the popular Facebook page Supermarket Deals and Offers, another shopper posted the sign and received dozens of comments.

One person wrote:

“Oh, I read that too quickly. I did a double take, then F*** or treat. Who designs these things?”

Another wrote:

“I don't think there will be many of those lights in windows. I did a double take when I saw it in the store, and I have new glasses.”

A third person said:

“Wow! I thought of that too.”

A Lidl representative noted in a conversation with the Eastern Daily Press:

“At Lidl GB, we never intend to offend or upset. This product is part of a range that has always been well received by customers. However, we apologize for any inconvenience.”

Miserable Halloween decorations

Interior expert Miriam Gomez identified seven mistakes that make your Halloween decorations look clumsy.

  • Too much orange and black can make your home look like a Halloween store.
  • Plastic tombstones look cartoonish rather than spooky.
  • Too much light can be overwhelming; it's best to mix in candles.
  • Artificial materials and excessive glitter can make your home look cheap.
  • Loud repetitive sounds can be incredibly annoying for you and your neighbors.
  • Inflatable garden decorations look clumsy and can fly into the neighbor's yard.
  • Not using classic elements like carved pumpkins.

The situation regarding the sign sparked lively discussions among shoppers. Many noted its ambiguity, as such a joke can be interpreted in various ways. The Lidl representative apologized for the misunderstanding but assured that their products are usually well-received on the market. This case highlights the importance of adhering to clearly defined standards in product manufacturing, especially during holiday periods when issues of ethics and perception are significant.
