Why Ukraine Cannot Reproduce the Patriot System: An Expert Names the Key Hurdles.
The Challenges of Building an Air Defense System in Ukraine
According to UATV: The discussion revolves around the difficulties of developing an equivalent to the Patriot air defense system in Ukraine. The focus is on technological hurdles, a lack of manufacturing capacities, and a shortage of skilled labor. Valeriy Borovyk, founder of the company First Contact, emphasizes the need to advance domestic solutions for ballistic and anti-ballistic protection.
According to Valeriy Borovyk, it is practically impossible to replicate the Patriot system in Ukraine within the specified timeframes.
“One must understand that it is practically impossible to replicate Patriot in the timeframes we are talking about,” he stated. The expert highlights that this technology is a
“high-tech product that is very difficult to copy.”
Experiences of Other Countries and Approaches for Ukraine
An important point is the experiences of other countries in manufacturing similar systems. For instance, Japan required more than six years for the licensed production of missiles, illustrating the lengthy and complex process of developing such technologies. Borovyk also points out that the core components of the Patriot system are not fully replicated in other countries, which further complicates the task for Ukraine.
Valeriy Borovyk suggests that the idea behind the production of ballistic and anti-ballistic systems in Ukraine is to create a cheaper and more widely available product.
“The idea of producing ballistic and anti-ballistic systems in Ukraine is to get a cheaper and mass-available product,” he explains. When it comes to anti-ballistic systems, one can rely on ready-made solutions such as radars and target systems:
“When it comes to anti-ballistic, you can use ready-made solutions: radars, target systems.”
The development of domestic technologies in the field of air defense in Ukraine is driven by the need to adapt to modern challenges while taking into account the experiences of other countries and the specific production conditions.
Given the current threats and the necessity to strengthen defense capabilities, the issue of developing domestic air defense systems for Ukraine is gaining increasing importance. In times of growing challenges, investments in new technologies and the development of domestic solutions can significantly influence the country's security. Understanding international experiences and adapting to available resources could be crucial factors for success in this field.
