Hillary Clinton - American politician, diplomat, lawyer, Secretary of State of the USA (2009-2013), Senator from New York (2001-2009), and First Lady of the USA (1993-2001), wife of Bill Clinton. Chancellor of Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland (since January 2020).

Place of birth and education. Born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Graduate of Wellesley College and Yale Law School. Doctor of Law. At university, she met Bill Clinton, whom she married in 1975.

Career. Before her marriage, she worked at the Children's Defense Fund and in the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives. Later she moved to Arkansas, where Bill Clinton began his political career.

From 1975, she taught at the University of Arkansas Law School, and from 1976, she worked at the Rose Law Firm.

In 1977, President Jimmy Carter appointed Hillary to the board of the Legal Services Corporation, which she later chaired.

In 1979, Bill Clinton was elected Governor of Arkansas. As First Lady of the state, Clinton actively participated in public life for many years (education, healthcare, and children's rights).

From 1986 to 1992, she was a member of the board of Walmart.

From January 21, 2009, to February 1, 2013, she served as US Secretary of State.

First Lady. Clinton was one of the most influential First Ladies in American history. As First Lady following her husband's victory in the 1992 presidential election, Hillary chaired the Health Care Task Force at her husband's request in 1993. A year later, she left the position after the failure of the reform.

In 1998, during the scandal over Bill Clinton's relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, which nearly resulted in the president's impeachment, Hillary supported her husband and refused to divorce.

Major politics. In 2000, Clinton was elected Senator from New York. She was re-elected in the November 2006 Senate elections.

After the official start of the presidential campaign in the fall of 2007, Hillary was considered the favorite, receiving significant support from Democratic voters. The situation changed when many voters accused the Clintons and the entire US system of collusion and questionable influence from the close circle of big capital. In the Iowa Caucus on January 3, 2008, voters showed a desire for change and new faces in politics. Barack Obama received the most votes. For a time, Hillary continued the competition but soon withdrew from the intra-party battle and declared her support for Obama.

After winning the 2008 election, Obama offered Hillary the position of US Secretary of State. On January 21, 2009, her nomination was approved by the Senate.

On April 12, 2015, Hillary announced her candidacy for the presidency as a candidate of the Democratic Party.

On November 8, 2016, Hillary lost the presidential election to Republican candidate Donald Trump, who received 306 electoral votes to Hillary Clinton's 232. After the results of the electoral college vote on December 19, 2016, 304 electoral votes for Trump and 227 for Clinton were confirmed. However, Clinton surpassed Trump by almost 2.9 million popular votes, receiving 65.84 million against Trump's 62.98 million.

On January 2, 2020, Hillary Clinton was appointed Chancellor of Queen's University Belfast for five years, becoming the first woman in the history of the university founded in 1845.

Books. On September 12, 2017, Hillary Clinton's book 'What Happened' was published, which deals with her participation in the presidential campaign.

Family. Hillary Clinton and her husband, twice US President Bill Clinton, raised their daughter Chelsea (1980).
