Thousands of Germans Intend to Change Passport Data – Deutsche Welle.

A new law will come into effect in Germany, making it easier to change the "gender" category in passports. Thousands of people have already contacted the German civil registry offices with the relevant request. For example, in Berlin, an official request to change the record of their new gender was submitted by about 1,000 local residents, in Leipzig about 650 people, in Hamburg - over 500, in Cologne - over 340, and in Munich - 300. This is reported by Deutsche Welle.

"Requests to change the passport record are received not only in large German cities but also in smaller ones. For example, in the Bavarian town of Straubing, 15 people made appointments at the civil registry office, in Bad Reichenhall - 4, and in Füssen - 3," journalists write.

According to the gender self-determination law adopted by the Bundestag in April and the Bundesrat in May, to change gender and name, one only needs to submit a simple declaration to the civil registry office, without needing two psychiatric opinions and a court decision as before. The law will come into effect on November 1. The German government anticipates that around 4,000 people will use this new possibility annually.

The new law provides for four gender options to be entered in the passport: "male," "female," "diverse," or "unspecified." When the record is changed, the previous one is annulled.
