Trump wants to expedite the deportation of migrants using the 1798 law - CNN.
Trump expedites the deportation of migrants
U.S. President Donald Trump plans to utilize 18th-century legislation to fulfill his promise of mass deportation of migrants. The Trump administration has faced obstacles in sending migrants back due to a lack of resources and diplomatic difficulties.
According to four sources from CNN, Trump plans to apply the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 for the deportation of migrants. He first mentioned this possibility during campaign rallies in October. There have been no official comments from the White House yet.
This law allows the president to detain and deport men aged 14 and older if they are citizens of a country with which the U.S. is at war.
One of the targets for the application of the law could be the Venezuelan criminal group Tren de Aragua. Trump may argue his actions are a threat to the U.S. from this group.
The Trump administration is dissatisfied with the slow pace of deportations of illegal migrants, despite deploying military forces and conducting raids in cities such as Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Austin.
There is also the issue of some countries refusing to accept deported migrants, as well as exceeding the capacities for deporting detained illegal immigrants, which creates difficulties for the immigration service.
