Trump had a phone conversation with Lukashenko: what the leaders discussed before the summit with Putin.
US President Donald Trump and self-proclaimed president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko had a phone conversation on August 15. This took place just hours before Trump's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The news about this event was announced on Donald Trump's page in the social network Truth Social.
Engaging conversation
Trump shared that the conversation with Lukashenko was 'great' and he is looking forward to meeting with the self-proclaimed leader of Belarus. Confirming that the purpose of his call was to thank Lukashenko for the release of 16 prisoners, Trump also noted that they discussed the issue of releasing another 1300 people.
The presidents talked about many topics, including Putin's visit to Alaska. Trump expressed gratitude to Lukashenko for his attention to the release of political prisoners and emphasized his anticipation for the upcoming meeting.
This was the first direct contact between Trump and Lukashenko, with no prior meeting having taken place. It is also worth noting that earlier, in June, a special envoy of Trump, Keith Kellogg, visited Minsk, after which the Belarusian leader decided to release a group of political prisoners, including opposition leader Sergey Tikhanovsky.
This phone conversation highlights the importance of diplomatic relations between the countries and facilitates the process of releasing political prisoners in Belarus. It also indicates a shift in the approach to communication between state leaders. Trump's meetings with Putin and his interest in contacts with Lukashenko are significant for the further development of the situation in the region.
