Trump questions the future of NATO and calls on alliance partners for help in the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump's critical message to NATO and Iran
According to Novyny.live: US President Donald Trump has issued clear warnings to NATO. Should the allies not support the US in actions against Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, he sees bleak prospects for the military alliance. Trump emphasized that joint efforts of multiple countries are necessary to manage the tense situation. The mentioned countries include:
- China
- France
- Japan
- South Korea
- Great Britain
Lens of the Strait of Hormuz: Escalation and global dependencies
The conflict in the Strait of Hormuz has escalated dramatically. This strait is considered one of the most important trade routes for global oil transport. Following the initiation of military US operations, Iran blocked this strategic passage, which raised concerns worldwide. Trump called on allies to send mine-sweepers to ensure safety in the region. He particularly highlighted the expected support from China, as the country derives 90 percent of its oil through this route. A trip by Trump to a summit with Xi Jinping in China is scheduled for the end of the month – a possible key moment for resolving the crisis.
At the same time, Trump expressed concerns regarding the consequences for NATO.
‘If there is no response or if the answer is negative, that will, in my opinion, have very negative implications for the future of NATO,’ the president said.He reminded that the US has been 'very generous' to its allies, such as supporting Ukraine, even though this country is thousands of kilometers away from the US. Trump questioned whether the allies would provide help in return: 'Now we will see if they will help us. Because I have said for a long time that we would be there for them – but they will not be there for us. And I am not sure if they will come.'
The US President also threatened Iran with unprecedented consequences for laying sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. This announcement highlights the growing tension in the region and the urgency of international cooperation to secure global stability.
Trump's statements not only illustrate the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz for the global economy, but also the potential impact on international relations – particularly within NATO. The question of cooperation among states in this conflict could indicate a shift in global alliances. The response of the allies to Trump's appeal may be crucial in determining whether transatlantic relations are strengthened or continue to fracture.
