Trump, Zelensky and European leaders discuss summit with Putin: meeting details.
Today there will be an online meeting between Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky and the leaders of major European states. It will take place a few days before the US president's summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska. European countries are concerned that the negotiations may lead to decisions unfavorable for Ukraine.
This was reported by Reuters.
Video Conference Ahead of the Summit in Alaska
It is expected that the video conference between Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the leaders of Germany, Finland, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Poland and the European Union will take place at 12:00 GMT (14:00 Central European Time), according to a German government spokesman. The NATO Secretary-General will also participate in the conference, which is being organized by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The leaders of Europe and Ukraine will meet with US President Donald Trump in a virtual meeting on Wednesday before his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin to emphasize the danger of selling Kyiv's interests for the sake of a ceasefire.
The unpredictability of how the summit will proceed has fueled European fears that the US and Russian leaders may make far-reaching decisions and even try to force Ukraine into an unfavorable agreement.
On Friday, Trump will meet with Putin for talks in Alaska, which will serve as a 'trial' meeting in his efforts to end the Russian-Ukrainian war. Last week, Trump agreed to the first US-Russia summit since 2021, sharply changing course after weeks of expressing frustration toward Putin for resisting the US peace initiative. Trump stated that his envoy made 'great progress' in negotiations in Moscow.
The US president says both Kyiv and Moscow will have to make territorial concessions to end the war. Russian troops have already occupied nearly one-fifth of Ukraine.
Online Meetings and European Concerns
According to the German spokesperson, after the conversation, Trump and Vice President Jay D. Vance are expected to address European leaders at a separate online meeting. After this, there will be an online meeting of the 'coalition of the willing' — a group of countries working on plans to support Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire.
European leaders, who fear provoking Trump’s anger, have repeatedly emphasized that they welcome his peace efforts while also stressing that no agreements regarding Ukraine should be made without Ukraine's participation. A dozen senior officials from European countries have reported seeing the risk of an agreement unfavorable to Europe and Ukraine's security.
Today’s online meeting between Trump, Zelensky, and European leaders before the summit in Alaska raises concerns among Europeans as they are worried about the potential consequences of these negotiations for Ukraine. The leaders plan to discuss a ceasefire and the danger of selling Kyiv’s interests, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the country's security.
