Trump’s Airport Security Strategy

According to Vox - Загальний: President Donald Trump has unveiled a plan to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to major U.S. airports in an effort to address security concerns and reduce delays. The agents began their assignments on Monday, targeting approximately 14 airports, including Newark, Chicago, and Atlanta. Despite their presence, they will not be directly involved in security screening procedures.

Ongoing Delays and Administration Response

Even with this initiative, some airports continue to experience multi-hour delays at security checkpoints. On Sunday, ICE agents arrested at least one individual at San Francisco International Airport. A portion of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) remains in a shutdown state, though ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are still operational. TSA employees are not receiving pay during this shutdown, as DHS funding expired last month.

Trump stated that 'the agents will ensure people do not go through the exits.'

Furthermore, the president added: 'I can call in the National Guard if ICE agents cannot fix the airport delays.' The Trump administration is thus attempting to tackle issues plaguing airport infrastructure, despite financial constraints within DHS.

These actions come amid a prolonged funding lapse at DHS, which may hinder their effectiveness. The deployment of ICE agents to airports signals an urgent effort to bolster security, yet their exact role in resolving delay issues remains uncertain.

With security services in shutdown and the potential for National Guard involvement, the situation at airport facilities could stay tense, impacting travelers in the near term.
