Trump Says Zelensky and Putin Must Resolve the War on Their Own.
The Conflict Between Ukraine and Russia
According to UATV: U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin should handle the resolution of the war between their countries without outside intervention. In his remarks, Trump made it clear he has no objection to the two leaders independently seeking ways to end the hostilities:
“I have no problem with it. Let them sort it out themselves.” — Donald Trump
The U.S. Position
Secretary of State Marco Rubio also weighed in, asserting that the United States is not acting as a neutral mediator in this conflict. According to him:
“Unfortunately, up to this point, neither side—especially the Russian side—has shown a willingness to make the concessions necessary to establish peace.” — Marco Rubio
He reaffirmed U.S. support for Ukraine, adding: “We are not supplying weapons to Russia. We are supplying weapons only to Ukraine.”
On June 4, Volodymyr Zelensky published an open letter to Vladimir Putin proposing direct negotiations. However, despite this initiative, Putin refused to meet with Zelensky, casting doubt on the possibility of a peaceful resolution to the conflict at this time. As a result, tensions remain high, and clear paths to peace have yet to emerge.
Amid the ongoing military confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, the stance of the United States continues to play a crucial role in shaping international policy. The statements from Donald Trump and Marco Rubio indicate that Washington supports Ukraine but acknowledges that peace talks hinge on both sides’ willingness to compromise. Putin’s refusal to engage in negotiations suggests that a resolution to the conflict in the near future remains uncertain.
