Abu Dhabi Hosts Three-Way Diplomatic Meeting

According to TSN.ua: Representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States convened for talks in Abu Dhabi. This meeting marks the first such trilateral gathering since the war began nearly four years ago. The talks followed a nearly four-hour meeting in Moscow between U.S. officials and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which was held in preparation for the Abu Dhabi discussions.

Following the conclusion of the Moscow meeting, the flight from the Russian capital to the United Arab Emirates took approximately five hours. U.S. Special Envoy Steve Whitkoff traveled to Russia on January 22 as part of the preparatory efforts for the trilateral negotiations.

A Complex Negotiating Environment

The meeting with Washington's representatives in Moscow was described as 'constructive and maximally frank.' However, according to one American source,

“diplomacy right now is a farce. It does not correspond to reality”
.

Sources among the participants in the UAE talks indicate that only one member of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's office, Kyrylo Budanov, commands serious respect from U.S. military and intelligence officials. A source told the publication,

“Budanov is the only member of Zelenskyy's office they take seriously”
.

This Abu Dhabi meeting opens new prospects for further dialogue between the parties but also confirms the complexity of the situation that has developed in relations between Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. The meeting represents a significant step in reviving diplomatic contacts, which have been severely complicated by the conflict. It demonstrates attempts to find paths to peace while simultaneously highlighting the uncertainty and difficulty of the negotiation process. These high-level talks are a rare occurrence, as direct diplomatic engagement between the warring parties has been extremely limited. Reports about the respect for Kyrylo Budanov may signal a shift in focus within Ukraine's military strategy and its interaction with American partners, which could influence future decisions in the conflict.
