Tsunami recorded near Japan's Izu Islands

On Tuesday, the remote Japanese Izu Islands, located south of Tokyo, experienced a small tsunami after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the tsunami reached Hachijo Island with a height of 50 cm approximately 40 minutes after the earthquake.

Currently, there are no confirmations of damage from the tsunami or the earthquake. Earlier, the meteorological agency warned the residents of the Izu and Ogasawara Islands of a possible tsunami up to 1 meter in height that could hit the coast.

The earthquake occurred underwater near the uninhabited island of Torishima, approximately 600 km south of Tokyo. The agency added that no significant aftershocks were recorded following this event.

The Izu Islands and the even more remote Ogasawara Islands include about a dozen inhabited islands with a total population of about 24 thousand people.

Recall that in August, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida canceled his planned trip to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Mongolia due to the threat of natural disasters. Japan has increased its preparedness for earthquakes along the Pacific coast.

This year, Japan experienced a 6.6 magnitude earthquake in the western part of the country in the Shikoku region.

Earthquake in Romania

Romania was shaken by an earthquake that was felt even by Ukrainians. The earthquake was the strongest in Romania since the beginning of 2024, with a depth of the underground shocks reaching 140 km. Rescuers urged people to remain calm in view of possible aftershocks.
