In the city of Dresden in Germany, there was a collapse of one of the most important bridges over the Elbe River. According to Tagesschau, a large part of the Carola Bridge fell into the Elbe early Wednesday morning. The section of the bridge where trams travel was affected, and there is a threat of collapse of other parts of the bridge. The cause of the incident is not yet known, but it may be related to repair work being carried out on the bridge since 2019.

Due to the collapse of the Carola Bridge, the entire area around it will be completely closed, leading to significant disruptions to road traffic. The important B170 transportation link over the Elbe will also be lost. The fire department reports the absence of centralized heating throughout Dresden.
It is worth mentioning that in July 2024, there was also a collapse of a road bridge in China during heavy rains, resulting in the deaths of 11 people. According to the New York Times, climate change is affecting the condition of bridges in the USA, as floods and extreme heat caused by climate changes intensify the process of infrastructure destruction, including bridge structures.
