The EU insists on signing a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Michel's efforts for a peace agreement on Nagorno-Karabakh
The President of the European Council Charles Michel held meetings with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan at the European Political Community summit in the United Kingdom, with the goal of reaching a peace agreement on Nagorno-Karabakh.
Subsequently, Michel sent a letter urging the President of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia to return to the negotiating table and achieve peace.
Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev failed to agree and accused each other of breaking off the meeting, causing dissatisfaction in the EU.
"Both sides must stop playing games and reach an agreement, as President Michel has done everything within the EU's power to achieve a peace agreement," noted an EU diplomat.
Nagorno-Karabakh remains a point of conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Both sides have expressed a desire to conclude a peace treaty to end the confrontation. In September 2023, the territory was regained by the Azerbaijani army, which caused a mass evacuation of Armenians. Since then, peace negotiations have continued to define the 1,000-kilometer border.
