Charles Michel

Charles Michel is a Belgian politician who was the chairman of the 'Reform Movement' party from 2011 to 2019, Prime Minister of Belgium from 2014 to 2019, and has been the President of the European Council since December 1, 2019.

Birthplace. Education. Charles Michel was born on December 21, 1975, in Namur, the capital of the Namur province in the Walloon region of Belgium. At the age of 16, he joined the organization 'Young Reformists-Liberals Jodoigne' and was an active political activist. In 1998, he completed his law studies at the Free University of Brussels and the University of Amsterdam and then began working as a lawyer.

Political Career. In 1999, he was elected to the Chamber of Representatives. In 2000, he became Minister of the Interior in the Walloon Government and was, at 25, the youngest minister in Belgian history. That same year, he was elected to the city council of Wavre and appointed mayor in 2006. On October 7, 2014, Charles Michel was appointed Prime Minister of Belgium, leading a center-right coalition government. He was Belgium's youngest Prime Minister since 1840.

On July 2, 2019, Michel was elected President of the European Council for the next 5 years.

Family. Charles Michel's father, Charles Louis Michel, served as Belgium's Foreign Minister and EU Commissioner for Development (2004-2009).

Charles Michel's wife is Amélie Derbaudrenghien. They are raising two daughters, Jeanne and Lucy.
