The Governor of South Kivu province reported the death of 78 people, but exact numbers are not available yet as not all bodies have been found. His counterpart from North Kivu also confirmed the death of 28 people and the survival of 58, adding that the boat capsized 700 meters from the port and the causes of the disaster are being investigated.
Fatal boat accidents are common in Congolese waters, where vessels are overloaded. Previously, a yacht sank in Italy with 22 people on board, and China was involved in a scandal for concealing the sinking of a nuclear submarine.
