Peace in Europe is approaching, but there are doubts about Russia's actions

According to ТСН: Finnish President Alexander Stubb reported that the situation regarding peace in Europe has become closer than ever since 2022. He also noted that some points of a potential peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia may turn out to be unfair.

In his New Year address, the Finnish leader emphasized that peace in Europe is currently closer than at the beginning of the full-scale war. However, he expressed certain doubts, stating:

«We cannot be sure whether Russia is ready for peace».

Stubb also indicated that Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine complicates achieving a fair outcome, which, in his opinion, is becoming increasingly distant. He emphasized:

«Peace is often a compromise. We must be ready for the fact that not all points of the peace agreement will likely correspond to our notion of fairness».

The president also highlighted the future relations between Finland and Europe with Russia, noting that they should be “functioning and peaceful”. He emphasized that “ultimately everything depends on Russia's actions”.

Additionally, in his New Year address, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed that Russia's war against Ukraine directly threatens European security, particularly Germany, and is part of a broader plan by Moscow against the entire continent.

The current situation in Ukraine and its impact on European security is becoming an increasingly relevant issue. Leaders of countries like Stubb and Merz emphasize the importance of cautious steps in relations with Russia, as the peace process remains complex and delicate. How events will develop further will depend on interactions with Moscow and the reactions of the global community.
