Ukraine's Parliament Urged to Pass Laws Establishing Cyber and Space Forces.
Strengthening Ukraine's Military Defense Capabilities
According to Novyny.live: During a parliamentary session held on March 26, Fedir Venislavskyi, a lawmaker from the 'Servant of the People' party, called for the introduction of legislative bills aimed at enhancing the defense capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. He specifically highlighted the need for laws to create dedicated cyber forces and a space force. These proposals are part of broader efforts to modernize Ukraine's military structure amid ongoing security challenges.
The draft law on establishing cyber forces within the Ukrainian Armed Forces is reportedly ready for adoption. Venislavskyi, who authored bill No. 13255, stated that
“The Armed Forces need a law on cyber forces because this will strengthen our capabilities.”He also urged the Parliamentary Conciliation Council and the leadership of the Verkhovna Rada to prioritize these initiatives by including them on the legislative agenda, saying:
“I call on the Conciliation Council and the leadership of the Verkhovna Rada to add these important laws to the agenda.”
Additionally, the draft law concerning the creation of a space force has already received a recommendation from the National Security Committee, indicating broad parliamentary support for the initiative. Venislavskyi emphasized that the Verkhovna Rada must place on its agenda and vote on any legislative measures designed to bolster the defense capacity and combat readiness of the Armed Forces.
The Strategic Importance of These Initiatives
In the context of defense capabilities, it is noteworthy that the Russian army reportedly possessed no more than 3–4 'Oreshnik' missiles at the start of the year and plans to produce only five such units annually. This information underscores the critical need for Ukraine to develop its own advanced defense technologies. Venislavskyi's proposals, therefore, could represent a significant step toward reinforcing national security and defense.
Adopting the laws on cyber and space forces could profoundly impact Ukraine's modern defense posture, especially given the growing threats posed by the aggressor. Strengthening the legal framework in these areas will not only improve the effectiveness of the Ukrainian Armed Forces but also send a strong signal to international partners about Ukraine's commitment to fortifying its defenses. These initiatives reflect a strategic approach to national security, with potential far-reaching implications for regional stability.
