In Volodymyr, Russia, the prosecutor's office forced the removal of the icon of Klymentiy Sheptytsky from the church.
In the Church of the Holy Virgin Mary of the Holy Rosary in Volodymyr, Russia, at the direction of the local prosecutor's office, the icon of Blessed Klymentiy Sheptytsky was dismantled. This was reported by 'Glavkom' citing Russian media.
The icon, located on the wall of the temple, was removed after local media published articles calling Sheptytsky a 'nationalist' and a 'supporter of Ukrainian nationalists-bandera members'.
The prosecutor's office demands the removal of the icon due to violations of the law
After the release of these materials, about seven individuals from different regions of Russia approached the General Prosecutor's Office, requesting a check on the situation regarding incitement to interethnic and interreligious enmity. In mid-May, the parish of the Holy Rosary in Volodymyr received an official submission from the prosecutor's office.
The document stated that the public placement of the icon of Klymentiy Sheptytsky contradicts Article 13 of Federal Law No. 114 'On Counteracting Extremist Activities'. The parish was ordered to immediately rectify the violation and also hold accountable those responsible for its allowance.
During religious disputes in Russia, there was certain prosecutorial pressure on denominations that manifested through the removal of icons and figures considered 'uncontrollable'. In this case, the authorities' aim is to prevent incitement of enmity, but for believers, this action may be regarded as a violation of freedom of religion.Read also
