Trump is losing the trust of Republicans: how Americans assess his policy regarding the war in Ukraine.
On Friday, August 15, U.S. President Donald Trump will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. At the same time, a new Pew Research Center survey confirmed that most Americans are skeptical of Trump's ability to make sound decisions regarding the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, including Republicans.
According to the study, 59% of Americans expressed doubts about Trump's competence on this issue, while 40% believe in him. Regarding the general approach of the administration to the conflict, 33% of Americans perceive Trump as leaning towards Russia, while only 6% believe that he supports Ukraine more, and 28% think he maintains the right balance. Another 32% have no clear opinion.
Public opinion is divided on the issue of the volume of aid to Ukraine: 29% believe that support from the U.S. is insufficient, while 18% are convinced that it is excessive. Democrats are more likely to see a deficit in support (48% compared to 35% among Republicans), and in recent months, the number of Republicans who consider the aid excessive has decreased.
Half of Americans believe that the U.S. has such an obligation, while the other half do not. Democrats are much more likely to acknowledge responsibility to Ukraine than Republicans. Only 31% of Americans consider Russia's invasion of Ukraine a serious threat to U.S. interests, with the difference in perception of this threat between Democrats and Republicans being evident.
Conclusion:
The Pew Research Center survey revealed that most Americans are skeptical of Donald Trump's ability to make decisions regarding the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. The study also showed that public opinion on support for Ukraine is divided, with Democrats more often favoring aid to the country than Republicans. There is also some divergence in the perception of the threat of Russia's invasion between representatives of political parties in the U.S.
