In Switzerland, a 64-year-old American woman first used the Sarco suicide capsule. However, the police opened a case for aiding in suicide. Several people have already been detained. This was reported by The Guardian and the Associated Press.

It is known that the capsule was used on September 23, in a forest in the commune of Meryschausen, near the border with Germany. Around 16:40, police officers, forensic experts, and prosecutors arrived at the scene. The capsule was confiscated, and the deceased woman was taken to the Zurich Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.

It is worth noting that Switzerland is one of the few countries in the world that allows assisted suicide provided that no third parties are involved in the process. However, euthanasia, that is, the deliberate taking of a sick person's life, is not allowed in Switzerland.

In the airtight Sarco capsule, death occurs after the person inside it presses a button and releases nitrogen. After this, the oxygen level decreases, which is said to cause no suffering to the person.

The Sarco was developed by 77-year-old Australian doctor and physicist Philip Nitschke, who has lived in the Netherlands for the past 10 years. The Dutch publication De Volkskrant wrote that Nitschke had previously tested the capsule several times using an oxygen mask, including in their presence.

According to Nitschke, the woman's death was “easy and painless.” He watched the woman's death via video and monitored her pulse and blood oxygen levels. Two minutes after pressing the button, she lost consciousness, and three minutes later, she died.

“We saw small muscle twitches in her hands, but by that Time she was probably already unconscious. It looked exactly as we expected,” Nitschke commented on the woman's death to journalists.

Before her death, the American woman said that she had wanted to die for two years, ever since she was diagnosed with a severe illness accompanied by intense pain. She said that her two sons fully supported her decision. She was examined by a psychiatrist who determined that the woman was mentally healthy.

Swiss police have detained four people in this case.

We should note that euthanasia is currently legalized in Belgium, the Netherlands, Colombia, Canada, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, and Austria. In Switzerland and some US states, such procedures are allowed but not legalized.

We recall that former Dutch Prime Minister Dries van Agt died from euthanasia along with his wife Eugenie. They were both 93 years old. The death of the former prime minister and his wife is regarded as part of the growing trend of “joint euthanasia” in the Netherlands.

It is worth mentioning that Turkey will introduce a controversial law on the euthanasia of stray animals.
