Restoring the European Hamster Population

According to Novyny.live: Efforts to revive the European hamster, listed in Ukraine's Red Book of endangered species, are ongoing in the Tarutynskyi Steppe of Odesa Oblast. This year alone, more than 15 of these animals have been released into the wild, marking a significant step in preserving the species.

According to provided data, 18 hamsters — 13 males and 5 females — were released between May and June 2026. Earlier, as part of a relocation initiative, an additional 6 hamsters — 5 males and 1 female — had been set free. In total, the program has released 24 individuals into the Tarutynskyi Steppe.

Biological Traits of the European Hamster

The European hamster (Cricetus cricetus) is the largest member of the hamster family in Europe, with a body length of up to 34 centimeters and winter food stores exceeding 20 kilograms. These figures highlight the species' ecological importance and its unique biological characteristics.

Rebuilding the European hamster population is a crucial step for conserving biodiversity in Ukraine. This species plays a key role in natural processes, making its protection a priority for maintaining the region's ecological balance.

The reintroduction of the European hamster in the Tarutynskyi Steppe is part of a broader program to protect rare species in Ukraine. Hamsters help aerate soil and control vegetation, so their return can enhance the overall ecosystem. These efforts underscore the importance of collaboration between government agencies and environmental organizations in carrying out conservation measures.
