History Teacher Banned from Teaching Until 2032 for Justifying Russia’s War.
Teacher’s Remarks Spark Public Outcry
According to Espreso.tv: A history teacher at St. Mary’s Catholic Academy in Menston, named Garwood, has been prohibited from teaching until June 2032. The disciplinary action follows his public justification of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, during which he referred to Ukrainians as 'satanic Nazis.' The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) determined that his statements amounted to an endorsement of the Russian aggression.
The controversy began in October 2023 when 11th-grade students asked Garwood a question. In response, he stated:
“I am glad that Vladimir Putin is killing satanic Nazis in Ukraine.”Garwood, who is Muslim, attempted to defend his views by citing Article 10 of the Equality Act 2010, which protects freedom of expression.
Ethical Standards in Education Under Scrutiny
The teaching ban has drawn strong reactions from both parents and students, highlighting the critical role of ethical conduct in classrooms.
This case underscores the growing tensions in educational settings over how to address ongoing political conflicts. It also reflects a broader societal debate about free speech and the responsibility of educators not to influence young minds with harmful rhetoric. Garwood’s ban may fuel further discussions on the ethical standards expected of teachers and their impact on shaping student perspectives.
