Investigation Underway After Violent Assault on 19-Year-Old Ukrainian in Wrocław.
Attack on Słodowa Island
According to Espreso.tv: On July 4, around 8:00 PM, a 19-year-old Ukrainian named Volodymyr was brutally attacked by a group of about ten peers on Słodowa Island in Wrocław. The assault left him with severe injuries, including a broken nose, spinal damage, and bruises across his body. Friends who witnessed the attack immediately called the police, but the perpetrators fled the scene before authorities arrived.
Initially, the incident was classified as a fight. Volodymyr was taken to the hospital, where doctors described his injuries as moderate. Wrocław police spokesperson Aleksandra Freus has confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the case.
Police Response and Broader Context
Reflecting on the attack, Volodymyr stated:
“Then they started hitting me on the head. I couldn’t see anything, I couldn’t defend myself.”He also indicated that the assault was motivated by his nationality, saying they beat him because he is Ukrainian.
Separately, on July 8, Polish police detained two men in Poznań for an anti-Ukrainian incident. The investigation in Wrocław remains ongoing, with law enforcement continuing to gather information about the attackers.
This attack highlights a troubling rise in ethnically motivated violence in Poland, raising concerns within the Ukrainian community. It follows other anti-Ukrainian incidents, pointing to a potentially dangerous trend that demands greater attention to interethnic relations. The police investigation may signal the severity of the situation and the possibility of holding the perpetrators accountable.
