Hungary Signals Readiness to Unblock Ukraine’s EU Accession Talks: What Shifted Its Position.
Hungary Opens Door to Negotiations with Ukraine
According to UATV: On June 3, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced that Budapest is prepared to clear the first hurdle in Ukraine’s European Union membership talks, following an agreement on the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine. He emphasized that in just three weeks, his government achieved what the previous administration under Viktor Orbán could not accomplish in a decade. The breakthrough centers on approximately 100,000 ethnic Hungarians living in Ukraine, whose protections became a decisive factor in the negotiations.
Magyar further stated that if Ukraine manages to close all 33 negotiation chapters within the next 10 to 15 years, a legally binding referendum on EU membership will be held in the country. This development marks a significant shift in Hungary’s stance, which had previously been a major obstacle to Ukraine’s integration efforts.
Hungary’s Support for Ukraine Takes Shape
In addition to unblocking the accession talks, Hungary has already released 40 billion euros in EU funds designated for arms supplies to Ukraine. This move underscores Budapest’s backing of the agreement and its willingness to cooperate on the European stage. Such actions signal a pragmatic turn in Hungary’s foreign policy, balancing national minority concerns with broader EU solidarity.
This progress represents a critical milestone for Ukraine on its path to European integration, opening up new avenues for collaboration with the bloc. Resolving the Hungarian minority rights issue could serve as a template for future negotiations with other EU member states that have their own conditions. Ultimately, these talks are poised to significantly shape Ukraine’s strategic relationship with the European Union and contribute to regional stability.
