Budapest Backs Kyiv’s EU Bid: What Hungary Gained in the Deal.
Agreement Reached Between Hungary and Ukraine
According to Espreso.tv: Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced a breakthrough agreement with Ukraine, the product of several weeks of negotiations. Kyiv has pledged to enshrine the agreed-upon measures into national law, paving the way for Budapest to support the opening of the first negotiating cluster for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
The deal emerged from weeks of bilateral talks between Hungary and Ukraine. The Ukrainian government committed to taking the necessary steps to formalize the arrangements. In exchange, Hungary confirmed its readiness to back the launch of EU accession negotiations for Ukraine. Péter Magyar remarked:
'In three weeks, we achieved what Orbán couldn’t accomplish in ten years.' Péter Magyar
Outlook for European Integration
Furthermore, should Ukraine successfully close all 33 chapters of EU accession within 10 to 15 years, Hungary will hold a referendum on the matter. The German Chancellor emphasized that 'minority rights issues must not become a pretext for slowing down European integration.' Consequently, the agreement between Ukraine and Hungary opens new avenues for Ukraine’s European integration journey.
This agreement carries strategic weight for Ukraine’s European integration, as it clears the path for advancing EU accession talks. Germany’s stance, stressing that minority rights concerns should not obstruct integration processes, also plays a key role. Successful implementation of the deal could mark a significant step forward for Ukraine in its Euro-Atlantic integration and in strengthening ties with European Union member states.
