Hungary Returns Seized Cash-in-Transit Vehicles to Ukraine's Oschadbank, But Funds Remain Held.
Oschadbank's Armored Vehicles Recovered from Hungary
According to UATV: On March 12, 2023, cash-in-transit vehicles belonging to Ukraine's Oschadbank, which had been illegally detained in Hungary, were handed over to bank representatives and Ukrainian diplomats. This return was facilitated by the efforts of Hungary's National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV), which also restored some personal belongings of the seven crew members from the cash collection team. This incident is part of ongoing legal and diplomatic tensions between the two neighboring nations.
Despite the return of the vehicles, seized funds and valuables totaling $40 million USD, €35 million, and 9 kg of bank gold remain illegally detained in Hungary. Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, confirmed the successful release of the seven Ukrainian citizens who had been held in Budapest.

The detention of the armored vehicles generated significant public outcry and raised serious questions about the legal basis for the Hungarian authorities' actions. Restoring ownership of the vehicles marks a crucial step in rebuilding trust between Ukraine and Hungary within the context of their bilateral relations. The continued effort to recover the detained funds and assets remains a priority for Ukrainian diplomats.
The Critical Role of Diplomatic Engagement
This case underscores the vital importance of diplomatic efforts in resolving interstate disputes. While the vehicles have been returned, the unresolved issue of the seized finances could have serious implications for economic relations between Ukraine and Hungary. Rebuilding confidence in this relationship is critically important for regional stability and future cooperation between the two countries, especially given the broader geopolitical context in Eastern Europe.
