Ukrainian Foreign Minister's Statement on Oschadbank Funds Seized by Hungary

According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has accused Hungary of engaging in 'state terrorism' and blackmail following the seizure of a Ukrainian cash shipment and the detention of its guards. The incident, which occurred on March 6th, saw Hungarian officials confirm the action was a response to Ukraine halting the transit of Russian oil. This event highlights the complex geopolitical tensions in the region, where energy politics and national sovereignty frequently intersect.

Background to the Incident

The detained Ukrainians were transporting a substantial consignment, including approximately $40 million, €35 million, and 9 kg of gold. A total of seven Ukrainian citizens were held. During their detention, they were reportedly handcuffed for 28 hours and transported blindfolded, actions that have caused significant alarm within the Ukrainian government.

Andrii Sybiha stressed that Ukraine cannot afford to naively submit to such blackmail. In response, Hungarian Minister János Lázár stated the situation resulted from complicated international relations and corresponding actions. The seizure of Ukrainian citizens and significant financial assets has sparked widespread concern both in Ukraine and internationally, with potential serious repercussions for bilateral relations.

This incident underscores the existing tension between Ukraine and Hungary, which already has a history of political disputes. The detention of the Ukrainian cash couriers, set against the backdrop of broader international conflicts, risks further escalation and international scrutiny.

It is crucial for both sides to maintain dialogue to resolve current misunderstandings and prevent similar incidents in the future.
