Blocking of the European Peace Fund by Hungary

Today, August 30, during a meeting of the European Union Foreign Affairs Council in Copenhagen, Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans noted that Hungary's blocking of the European Peace Fund threatens US peace initiatives.

“Honestly, regarding, for example, the European Peace Fund (EPF), we discussed this yesterday. It not only disappoints me, but in my opinion, is counterproductive since Hungary claims to stand for peace. Furthermore, the European Peace Fund can be used, for instance, for the PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) program, to finance the supply of American weapons to Ukraine. Thus, by blocking the fund, Hungary is blocking or hindering not only Ukraine and the EU but also the US's peace efforts,” he noted.

Brekelmans expressed hope that Hungary would reconsider its position, as all countries should work together towards achieving peace.

For reference: Hungary has blocked around 7 billion euros from the European Peace Fund, which was intended to pay for weapons supplies to Ukraine.

This situation highlights the importance of international cooperation in security and stability issues. The blocking of the fund not only affects Ukraine but also complicates the overall efforts of Europe and the US to support peace in the region. It is essential to monitor the further developments of this issue, as the positions of states determine the course of events.
