Hungarian Delegation Visits Ukraine, Leaving Zelenskyy Unclear on Its Purpose.
The Situation with the 'Druzhba' Oil Pipeline
According to Novyny.live: A Hungarian delegation arrived in Ukraine on March 11 to inspect the condition and potential for restarting the 'Druzhba' oil pipeline. This visit follows a statement by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who in February 2023 announced the creation of a commission to assess the pipeline's status. The issue is critical for bilateral relations, as Hungary had previously blocked a €90 billion EU financial aid package for Ukraine over the halt of Russian oil supplies.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remarked, 'The foreign ministry informed me that some people had arrived. They characterized it as a private trip.'
Zelenskyy also stressed the need to understand the pipeline's condition, asking, 'What state is the pipeline in after Russian attacks?' He pointed out the irony of the situation, noting that 'one should address Vladimir Putin, since it is Russia that is destroying the pipeline.'
Dialogue Between Ukraine and Hungary
The Hungarian delegation's visit signals a potential intensification of dialogue between Ukraine and Hungary on key energy security matters. Restoring the 'Druzhba' pipeline's operations could significantly impact economic ties between the two nations, especially as Europe seeks to reduce dependence on Russian energy. This comes at a time when Hungary's stance within the EU has often diverged from that of its allies regarding support for Ukraine.
The assessment of the pipeline's condition and its potential for restoration remains a focal point for both governments, underscoring the issue's importance for regional security and energy stability.
