Ukraine's Ambitious Air Force Modernization Plan

According to TSN.ua: In a significant military procurement effort, Ukraine intends to build a new air force fleet comprising 150 Saab Gripen and 100 Dassault Rafale fighter jets. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed that the acquisition of both aircraft types will proceed simultaneously. The total estimated cost for these fighters is approximately 50 billion euros. This massive investment underscores Ukraine's urgent drive to rebuild its air power, which has been heavily engaged since Russia's full-scale invasion.

The latest unit price for a Gripen is 184.4 million euros, making the total for 150 aircraft 27.66 billion euros. For the Rafale, the latest unit price stands at 225 million euros, bringing the total cost for 100 units to 22.5 billion euros.

Production Capacity and Long-Term Operating Costs

Manufacturer Saab has the capacity to produce 12 Gripen fighters per year, while Dassault can build 26 Rafale aircraft annually. The estimated service life for these fighters is 40 years. The projected operational costs over that lifespan are around 45 billion euros for 100 Rafales and approximately 55 billion euros for 150 Gripens.

By forming this new fleet, Ukraine seeks to significantly bolster its defensive capabilities. Nations with powerful air forces, such as the United States, China, Russia, India, South Korea, Japan, Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt, maintain substantial arsenals of modern aircraft. For comparison, the fighter jet inventories of some major European nations are:

  • France - 235
  • Germany - 226
  • United Kingdom - 159

This decision reflects Ukraine's determination to strengthen its defensive capacity in the face of escalating threats.

The creation of this new air fleet represents a critical step within the context of the current geopolitical landscape and the struggle for regional security. Enhancing its air power will enable Ukraine to more effectively counter aggression and ensure national security, particularly amid ongoing active military conflicts.
