Ukraine’s Path to Acquiring Gripen Fighter Jets

According to Espreso.tv: Retired Major General Volodymyr Havrylov, who served as Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister from 2022 to 2023 and headed the Yevhen Bereznyak Military-Diplomatic Academy from 2014 to 2015, has outlined how Ukraine could obtain Swedish Gripen fighter jets, their advantages over American F-16s, and the specifics of Kyiv’s cooperation with Stockholm. His insights shed light on a key strategic shift in Ukraine’s air power ambitions as the war evolves.

What Sets the Gripen Apart from Other Fighters

At the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine evaluated several options: U.S.-made F-16s, Swedish Gripens, and French Mirage and Rafale jets. Notably, Sweden was not yet a NATO member during these initial talks. Havrylov emphasized that Ukrainian pilots regard the Gripen as a modern and highly capable platform. A standout feature is its compatibility with long-range Meteor missiles, which could dramatically enhance Ukraine’s aerial strike capability.

A critical point is that the F-16s already delivered to Ukraine struggle to effectively counter Russian tactical aircraft. In early May, Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov traveled to Sweden to negotiate increased aid, laying the groundwork for deeper cooperation. By late May, Sweden confirmed it would transfer Gripen jets to Ukraine as part of a $2.7 billion assistance package. Consequently, Ukraine and Sweden signed an agreement to procure 16 advanced Gripen E fighters.

Havrylov stressed that if Ukraine receives Gripens armed with Meteor missiles, it would significantly alter the battlefield dynamics, forcing Russian aviation to retreat further from the combat zone. This capability opens new possibilities for strengthening Ukraine’s defenses amid ongoing threats.

Securing Gripen fighters represents a major leap forward for the Ukrainian Air Force’s combat effectiveness. Given the persistent danger from Russia, bolstering the country’s aerial defense is a critical priority. The partnership with Sweden in this domain could also serve as a model for other nations considering military support for Ukraine.
