A Real Pathway to EU Accession for Ukraine

According to UATV: Vyacheslav Potapenko, Deputy Director of the National Institute for Strategic Studies, has stated that Ukraine now has a tangible opportunity to join the European Union. After five years as an official candidate, the European community is increasingly viewing Ukraine as an integral part of its own sphere.

“The dynamic has shifted—Europe now sees Ukraine as part of itself.” — Vyacheslav Potapenko

This marks a growing recognition of Ukraine on the global stage, particularly regarding its push for deeper integration into European institutions. As Potapenko noted, 'Ukraine has been waiting in line for EU membership for decades, and for five years we have held candidate status.'

Challenges and Prospects

It is worth noting that Ukraine is already linked to the EU’s energy grid and trade system, representing significant progress in bilateral cooperation. However, Potapenko pointed out that legal obstacles still hinder Ukraine’s accession:

  • “The legal side remains complicated.”

He also emphasized that 'the qualitative shift now underway is largely due to the United States stepping back from European policy,' suggesting that broader geopolitical changes are reshaping the EU’s approach.

As Ukraine’s integration into European structures deepens and EU perceptions evolve, fresh opportunities are emerging for stronger ties between Kyiv and Brussels—even as unresolved legal hurdles demand attention. These developments could spark new initiatives aimed at overcoming remaining challenges and improving the effectiveness of EU-Ukraine cooperation. Given the current geopolitical landscape, Ukraine’s next moves may significantly influence the pace of its European integration journey.
