Ukraine Receives Defective Ammunitions from Western Partners – Media.
Ukraine received substandard ammunitions that exploded immediately after being fired. Part of the weapons was supplied through the initiative of the Czech Republic and the United States. This was reported by Handelsblatt.
According to the publication, in August the Ukrainian government admitted to the Czech Republic cases where shells exploded immediately after being fired.
"During the combat use of the specified shells, numerous explosions of shells occurred at a distance of 20-60 meters from the muzzle, resulting in injuries to personnel and damage to artillery systems," the Ukrainian side stated in a letter available to the publication.
Handelsblatt notes that the likely cause of the defect is outdated detonators of types M515 and M51A5, which were created during World War II. According to Ukrainian data, out of 35 thousand artillery shells, 0.05% have a defect. That is, five out of 10 thousand fired shells explode prematurely.
As reported, the United States announced a new security assistance package for Ukraine in early July worth up to $200 million under a special presidential authority program.
The Biden administration also asked the US Congress to extend the presidential authority (PDA). This will allow the continuation of military aid supplies to Ukraine after the end of the fiscal year in September.
