Ukraine Submits Evidence to ICC on Russian Energy Infrastructure Attacks.
Evidence Submitted to the International Criminal Court
According to UATV: Ukrainian authorities have formally submitted a dossier of evidence to the International Criminal Court (ICC) detailing Russian attacks on the nation's energy infrastructure, which have resulted in civilian deaths and injuries. The evidence, compiled by the Prosecutor General's Office in cooperation with the Security Service of Ukraine's main investigative department, was prepared under Article 15 of the Rome Statute. Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko stated that these coordinated strikes were designed to cripple the technological chain of Ukraine's power grid.
Marking Four Years of Full-Scale War
This submission comes as Ukraine marks the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion on February 24, 2024. The ICC Prosecutor's Office has been informed of the timeline of the attacks, their consequences, and the specific Russian military units and political-military leadership potentially responsible for ordering them. Over the course of the war, Ukrainian prosecutors have documented more than 200,000 alleged war crimes committed by Russian forces, and the work to collect and systematize this evidence is ongoing. The International Criminal Court is a key institution for prosecuting war crimes and crimes against humanity when national courts are unable to do so.
The transfer of this evidence is a significant step in the international legal process, which could lead to investigations and prosecutions for war crimes committed during the conflict. The collected materials could form the basis for holding not only the direct perpetrators accountable but also those who issued the orders. This underscores the gravity of the situation and Ukraine's commitment to working within international legal frameworks to seek justice and protect human rights, a process with potential long-term implications for international relations and justice in armed conflicts.
