Seven More Ukrainian Civilians Freed from Russian Captivity on June 27.
Return of Ukrainians from Russian Captivity
According to UATV: On June 27, Ukraine secured the release of seven more civilians who had been held by Russian forces, according to Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights. All of those freed were unlawfully detained by Russian troops in 2022 during the occupation of the Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Luhansk regions, as well as the cities of Mariupol and Bucha. The ages of the returnees range from 35 to 66.
Lubinets reported that one of the Ukrainians was abducted from his home solely because his sons serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Another citizen was seized while on his way to work on the day of Russia's full-scale invasion. Among those released is also a volunteer who joined the 'Angels of Taira' brigade in Mariupol in 2022.
Ongoing Captivity Situation
Currently, more than 1,800 Ukrainian civilians remain in Russian captivity, with the actual number of abducted individuals potentially reaching as high as 16,000. This situation continues to raise alarm both within Ukraine and internationally, underscoring the urgent need for persistent efforts to secure the return of all Ukrainian citizens held by Russia.
The return of these seven individuals marks a significant step in the ongoing process of freeing civilians who have fallen victim to unlawful detention during the war. It highlights both the scale and severity of the abduction and captivity crisis. The issue of bringing Ukrainian citizens home remains a top priority, demanding sustained attention from Ukrainian authorities and the global community alike—an effort that could shape future negotiations and the pursuit of justice for human rights violations during the conflict.
