Statement from Ukraine's Ombudsman

According to Espreso.tv: Ukraine's Ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, has raised the alarm over a suspected case of a child being taken by occupying forces and is calling for an official investigation. He stressed the urgent need to establish a mechanism for the mandatory evacuation of children from high-risk areas. Lubinets has formally appealed to the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, underscoring that protecting minors in active combat zones must be a top priority.

Available evidence indicates that Russia has been systematically deporting Ukrainian children since 2014. Dmytro Mykhalov, Lubinets' representative in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, emphasized that every instance where a child lacks proper safeguards in a war zone must receive full legal scrutiny. Lubinets pointed out that if it is confirmed that the girl was removed by occupiers, authorities must determine why she was still residing in a frontline settlement.

The Broader Context of Child Deportation

Beyond this specific case, the Bring Kids Back UA initiative has identified 20,610 Ukrainian children who have been either deported or forcibly relocated to the Russian Federation. The OSCE has now classified the militarization of Ukrainian children as a crime against humanity.

This situation highlights the grave challenges surrounding child protection in Ukraine, especially in conflict zones where the threat of deportation or forced displacement remains severe. Efforts to extract children from dangerous areas are critical to ensuring their safety and well-being amid the ongoing war. Government bodies and international organizations must take immediate action to address this issue and uphold children's rights.
