Statements by the Hungarian Defense Minister on the war in Ukraine

According to ТСН: Hungarian Defense Minister Kristof Szalay-Bobrovniczky expressed a number of resonant opinions, repeating the government's rhetoric regarding the military conflict in Ukraine. He publicly stated that in a military context, Ukraine 'has lost this war' to Russia, explaining this by the significant difference in the level of armed forces readiness.

The Minister of Defense emphasized Russia's advantage, stating that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are only 40 percent staffed, while the Russian Armed Forces are at 70%. In his opinion, this difference indicates that 'from a military point of view, Ukraine has lost this war.'

Szalay-Bobrovniczky also reported that a thousand fighters die every day on the front, a quarter of whom die directly in combat.

The minister emphasized that peace can only be achieved through diplomatic negotiations.

'Hungary continues to stand on the side of peace. We once again call for an urgent stop to the deaths of innocent people and to conduct diplomacy instead of hostilities,' said the minister.

He also expressed concern about the leaders of EU member states, accusing them of attempting to 'ruin' US plans for establishing peace and of intending 'to do everything to keep the war going.'

Furthermore, the politician noted that the high probability of 'intentional or accidental escalation' of the war could threaten the Hungarian people.

It was previously mentioned that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban believes that Ukraine's territory should be divided, as this is supposedly the 'only possible long-term solution'.

Orban also stated, that Hungary is ready to provide a platform for peace negotiations regarding Ukraine.

Statements by Hungarian officials reflect the growing tension in the geopolitical context of the war in Ukraine. Hungary, as a neighboring country, is trying to find ways for a peaceful resolution of the conflict, but at the same time, has its own interests that affect its position in international negotiations. These statements may also escalate tensions in relations with other EU countries that support Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression.
