Ukraine and Russia have started an energy war: strikes on refineries and gas infrastructure
On the eve of winter, Ukraine and Russia began exchanging strikes on key facilities of the oil and gas complex. According to The Washington Post, while Russia previously primarily attacked Ukrainian energy infrastructure, Ukraine is now responding with strikes on Russian oil refineries.

According to inkorr.com: On Thursday, Ukrainian drones attacked a refinery in Bashkortostan, causing a large fire. On the same day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced a strike on one of the largest refineries in Volgograd, forcing the plant to halt its operations. On Saturday, oil refineries in Saratov and Novokuybishevsk came under fire.

Increased Russian pressure on the Ukrainian energy system

The Russian military has increased the frequency of strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities. Attacks on gas infrastructure, which is critical for Ukraine's heating system, are particularly concerning. The CEO of DTEK expressed fears about possible massive attacks by Russian drones and their consequences.

Impact of Ukrainian attacks

President Zelensky stressed that strikes on Russian oil facilities could significantly limit the activities of Russia's oil industry. Representatives of the Russian oil industry noted the rise in gasoline prices and the possibility of reduced production due to the attacks.

Challenges for Ukraine ahead of winter

The CEO of Naftogaz reported a decrease in gas production and serious damage to the oil refining sector due to the strikes. Ukraine has signed contracts that will cover about 95% of the country's gas needs; however, experts warn that these supplies may be insufficient during harsh winter months.

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia in the energy sector continues to escalate, with both sides actively trying to strike at key energy facilities. This competition could have serious consequences not only for both countries but also for the region as a whole.
