New Demining Machines 'Zhermina' and GCS 200 Accelerate Land Clearance in Ukraine.
Humanitarian Demining in Ukraine
According to UATV: Ukraine is actively seeking advanced technologies to clear areas contaminated by Russian military actions. As part of these efforts, modern equipment is being showcased, including the Ukrainian-made 'Zhermina' and the German GCS 200. Over 133,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian land are potentially littered with explosive devices, posing a serious threat to public safety.
The 'Zhermina' machine can clear up to 3 hectares per day, a critical factor in speeding up the removal of hazards.
“The machine can demine up to 3 hectares per day. This is very important because it's about the volume and pace of freeing our land from threats. Second is safety.” - Oleksiy VoytsekhovskyiThis highlights the role of technology in protecting lives and restoring territory.
Ukraine's Ministry of Defense already operates over 20 GCS 200 machines. Lorie Venter stated that
“this machine has been tested and is used by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine near the line of combat contact”, confirming its effectiveness in field conditions. Over the past year, more than 60 innovative equipment models have been tested in the country, reflecting rapid progress in this sector.
Demining Technologies
Among the technologies presented are:
- heavy demining vehicles
- robotic systems
- drones
- sensor systems
- personal protective gear for sappers
Oleh Shuvarskyi emphasized that “today, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine pays great attention to the development of innovations and technologies,” underscoring the seriousness of the approach to solving the demining challenge. The adoption of new technologies is a key step toward creating a safer environment for Ukrainians.
Given the ongoing war and the scale of humanitarian demining, Ukraine's active push for new technologies is critical for ensuring public safety and rebuilding affected areas. With such a vast expanse contaminated by explosives, the efficiency of innovative machines can significantly accelerate land clearance and the return to normal life. These tools not only help reduce risks for civilians but also support infrastructure restoration and socio-economic recovery in war-torn regions.
