Ukraine's UN Security Council Stance: No Territorial Concessions to Russia.
Statement by Mariana Betsa at the UN Security Council
According to Novyny.live: During a UN Security Council meeting, Ukraine's Deputy Minister of Defense, Mariana Betsa, declared that Ukraine will not agree to any territorial concessions for Russia and will never recognize its occupation. She stressed that Kyiv will reject any terms that could threaten the nation's sovereignty. Betsa asserted that Russia's sense of impunity for its actions demands an active response from the international community.
Ukraine's Position on Sovereignty
In her address, she underscored the imperative of respecting state sovereignty, stating:
“The Kremlin insists that Ukraine withdraw from its own sovereign territory to allow Russia to occupy it... The sovereignty and territorial integrity of states are fundamental principles of the UN Charter.” - Mariana Betsa
Betsa further emphasized that “every state must be confident that its sovereignty is respected, its people are safe, and aggression is punished.”
The Security Council session, which included UN Secretary-General António Guterres, focused on issues of aggression and regional security. Betsa called on the international community to take more decisive action in defending Ukraine's sovereignty and highlighted the critical importance of a unified stance against territorial concessions. She affirmed that Ukraine will remain steadfast in its principles and will not surrender its freedom. This meeting comes as Russia's war in Ukraine continues to challenge the post-World War II international order.
Mariana Betsa's address to the UN Security Council served as a significant signal to the global community regarding the immutability of Ukraine's position on its territorial integrity. Given Russia's ongoing aggression, such statements underscore the necessity of support from other nations to ensure peace and stability in the region. A robust response from international institutions to the aggressor's actions could be a decisive factor in preventing further escalation of the conflict.
