Ukraine Demands Hungary Return Seized Cash and Assets from State Bank.
Ukraine Calls for Hungary to Return State Bank Assets
According to Novyny.live: On March 8, 2023, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on Hungary to return cash and precious metals seized from armored vehicles belonging to Ukraine's state-owned Oschadbank. This demand follows an incident on February 5, 2023, where Hungarian authorities intercepted and impounded two of the bank's armored cash transport vehicles. This diplomatic dispute occurs amidst broader European tensions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Seven Ukrainian citizens, who were Oschadbank employees, were detained in connection with the incident. The vehicles were reportedly found within a restricted area of Hungary's Counter-Terrorism Centre. In response, Ukraine's National Police have initiated criminal proceedings concerning the alleged abduction of its citizens and the vehicle on Hungarian territory.
Andrii Sybiha stressed the critical need for the seized property's return, stating: 'This money does not belong to Hungary or its government; it is the property of the Ukrainian state bank Oschadbank, and therefore, of Ukrainian taxpayers.'
The case has raised significant concern in Ukraine, as it involves not just substantial financial losses but also the safety and rights of its citizens abroad.
Potential Impact on Bilateral Relations
This situation threatens to seriously damage bilateral relations between Ukraine and Hungary. It brings into sharp focus issues of human rights and the security of Ukrainian citizens overseas. The demand for the return of Oschadbank's assets also raises questions about trust in Hungarian law enforcement and their adherence to international cooperation standards. The Ukrainian side expects a resolution that complies with international law and the mutual obligations both nations share.
