Ukraine Calls for New Talks on Transnistria, Citing Russia's Lost 'Peacekeeper' Status.
Ukraine Demands Overhaul of Transnistria Negotiations
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine is insisting on a new format for talks concerning the breakaway region of Transnistria, arguing that Russia has forfeited any right to act as a 'peacekeeper.' Ambassador Paun Rohovei, Ukraine's envoy to Moldova, stressed that the existing '5+2' negotiation framework has produced no progress whatsoever over its 30-year history. The diplomat contends that Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, lacks the moral authority to participate in peace negotiations.
'What moral right does such an aggressor state have today to claim the role of a great peacemaker?' - Paun Rohovei
Rohovei stated that negotiating a peaceful conflict settlement with an aggressor state is unacceptable. Given Russia's ongoing aggressive policies, Ukraine and Moldova must seek new approaches to resolving the dispute. The Transnistria conflict, which began in the early 1990s, remains a source of instability in Eastern Europe.
Integrating Transnistria's Residents
Furthermore, Rohovei highlighted that the Republic of Moldova has taken significant steps for the residents of the Left Bank, many of whom have obtained Moldovan citizenship. This move demonstrates Moldova's commitment to integrating Transnistria's inhabitants into its legal and social framework.
Consequently, the need for Transnistria's reintegration is becoming increasingly urgent, and altering the negotiation format could be a first step toward resolving this protracted conflict. A revised diplomatic process could open new avenues for a peaceful settlement, as current methods have yielded no results for three decades. The joint stance of Ukraine and Moldova underscores the importance of regional cooperation in the face of Russian aggression, which is crucial for strengthening stability and security.
