Europe's Negotiator with Russia to Be Chosen by Ukraine: Fresh Insights from the European Council Summit.
Closed-Door Talks at the European Council
According to Novyny.live: During a two-hour closed session of the European Council held this week, leaders discussed the framework for negotiations with Russia and Ukraine's role in selecting Europe's representative. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that discussions on Ukraine lasted longer than at any previous European Council meeting. He also emphasized that European nations plan to compile a list of potential candidates for talks with the Russian Federation, and that Ukraine will have the authority to decide who will serve as Europe's negotiator.
Additionally, Zelenskyy revealed that the risks of aggression toward other countries were addressed. The Ukrainian leader expressed confidence that Ukraine would open five more EU integration clusters between mid- and late July.
“I do not believe we will fail to open them in July. There is a chance from mid- to late July to open five more clusters, unless there is purely political blocking,” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
International Agreements and EU Integration
For context, on June 16, Zelenskyy secured agreements with G7 leaders and EU officials regarding licensed technology for anti-missile systems. On June 18, a meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico took place in Brussels. These events highlight Ukraine's active engagement in international negotiations and its commitment to European integration.
The discussions at the European Council signal a shift in how Ukraine is perceived within European politics, which could strengthen its international standing. Determining representatives for talks with Russia marks a crucial step in forging a united European front on regional security and stability. The planned opening of new EU integration clusters further underscores Ukraine's drive to deepen cooperation with the European Union and bolster its economic ties, potentially benefiting its economy amid the current geopolitical challenges.
