In support of his campaign, Senate Majority Leader John Thune addressed the public on Twitter: 'It was a great honor to work alongside John Cornyn – one of the most effective and respected conservative leaders in the country.' This came after Cornyn officially launched his campaign for the 2026 Senate elections, where he plans to run for a fifth six-year term. Thune's statement fueled speculation that Cornyn may face off against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the primary intra-party competition. Paxton, who supports the 'Make America Great Again' ideology, has mentioned several times the possibility of challenging Cornyn and even referred to him as 'RINO' – a Republican who does not align with conservative values. However, experts note that defeating Cornyn in the primary will be an expensive endeavor, and it is still uncertain whether Paxton can raise the necessary funds.
