Overhauling Ukraine's Drone Acquisition Strategy

The new system will automatically determine military requirements based on verified data from the front lines. This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency of budget spending and ensure that combat units receive the most advanced technology for battlefield operations. This shift is a direct response to the evolving demands of a high-tech war of attrition.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has signed an order enacting these changes. From now on, the need for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will be established automatically, using validated combat data. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will compile procurement lists for UAVs based strictly on the technical specifications of relevant models. This will lead to a more rational selection of equipment deployed in combat conditions.

Funding and Innovation Balance

Under the new framework, 80% of funds will be allocated to solutions that have already proven their effectiveness according to various data systems. Meanwhile, 20% of the budget is reserved for innovation and purchasing new developments, ensuring a balance between proven technologies and novel ideas in the drone sector.

Furthermore, on March 9, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the dispatch of drone experts to help protect US bases in Jordan. This step underscores the importance of international cooperation and experience-sharing in military technology. Ukraine's expertise in drone warfare, honed through extensive combat use, is increasingly recognized by its allies.

The UAV procurement procedure is now set to become more transparent and data-driven, allowing for more effective resource use and enhanced frontline security. The new process involves utilizing a drone rating system founded on combat data from platforms such as:
