A representative of the Progressive Party from Chicago urges Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to resign from his position, joining a growing list of like-minded Democrats who share the same vision after he allowed a vote on the Republican spending plan to avoid a government shutdown.

Congresswoman Delia Ramirez expressed her opinion on Wednesday that Schumer should have seized the opportunity of a government shutdown to confront President Donald Trump and the spending plan that proposed deeper cuts to programs and government personnel already directed by Elon Musk and the Department of Public Administration.

'This is a moment when Democrats need to do more than just talk about fighting against Donald Trump's destruction of Social Security and Medicaid, but actually use all legislative powers to do so,' Ramirez said during an interview.

Ramirez is among a growing number of House members who criticize Schumer or call for his resignation, and this list may expand during local meetings. So far, none of his Senate colleagues have publicly commented on this opinion.

One of the listeners from the electoral districts raised this question with Ramirez at a community meeting on Tuesday, asking if she believes Schumer should lose his position as Minority Leader. The congresswoman, who was first elected in 2018, smiled, nodded, and answered 'yes,' passing the microphone to other participants.

'I said 'yes' because I absolutely believe that at this very moment our voters are asking us to treat them as leaders who truly listen to our voters and make tough decisions to do everything possible to uphold the position,' Ramirez told POLITICO.

Virtually every Democratic member voted against the Republican plan in the House, demonstrating unity under the leadership of Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Schumer stated that the spending plan is a 'terrible' bill, but a government shutdown would only strengthen Trump and Musk in firing federal workers and cutting public agencies.

The veteran New York senator stated he has no intention of stepping down, even in the face of rising criticism.

Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, a longtime ally of Schumer, said on Tuesday that she is leaving him her support but accused him in extremely blunt terms of what she perceived as a loss of an important political lever in the fight against the Republicans. On the same day, Democratic candidate Glenn Ivey at a community meeting in Suposum township in Washington County, home to many government workers, called on Schumer to consider resigning.

Ramirez, who was first reported by Axios, said her criticism is rooted in what she has heard from her constituents.

'What I heard from every single person who came through the line, as well as from people I spoke to later, was that we are not satisfied with how the Democratic Party leadership is functioning,' she stated. 'We believe you all need to do more.'
